The primary responsibility of the Lead Radiation Therapist is to coordinate day-to-day activities of the radiation therapy staff.  The lead therapist will also be responsible for performing technical and supervisory duties in the Radiation Therapy department, enforcing established departmental and hospital policies and procedures in order to provide high quality and efficient patient care.  The Lead Therapist is responsible for promoting harmonious relations and favorable attitudes among health care team, including Therapists, Physicists, Dosimetrists, Nurses, Administration and the medical staff. The Lead Therapist serves as a liaison between the radiation therapy staff team and the patient, the physicians, the general public and the medical community to coordinate quality patient care. The Lead Therapist is required to demonstrate leadership and an ability to make decisions and solve problems as they arise in the treatment area.  The Lead Therapist is responsible for implementation and continuous review of clinical practice standards as it relates to external beam treatment delivery.



1.     Provides daily, direct supervision of the Radiation Therapists’ performance and the treatment delivery process to ensure timely, safe, and efficient, and cost-effective patient care.

2.     Plans, schedules, and organizes for the group ensuring proper distribution and delegation of assignments and efficient utilization of personnel to include weekly staff scheduling and on-call rotations.

3.     Collaborates with Physicians, Physicists, Dosimetrists, Nursing, and support staff to plan and implement corrective actions in order to improve treatment delivery standards.

4.     Assist staff in identifying and solving problems within the clinic.  Maintains interpersonal and professional relations with staff.

5.     Provide support as needed with the coordination of chart rounds and monitors compliance with departmental as well as regulatory policies and guidelines.

6.     Participates in the hiring process, provides orientation, on-going training and education, perfoms staff evaluations, implements disciplinary actions, and other related activities.

7.     Performs chart audits to ensure accuracy in coding and billing practices.

8.     Ensures accurate and timely reporting of equipment malfunctions, treatment errors, equipment damage, and radiation safety violations to the appropriate resource.

9.     Ensures competency across machines with the ability to proactively assist at any time.

10.  Participate in local clinic huddles and attend appropriate staff meetings as the radiation team lead.

Minimum Education, Experience and Licensure Required:

·         Graduate of an accredited radiation therapy program.

·         Five years clinical experience in all modalities as a Radiation Therapist preferred.

·         Registered by the American Registry of Radiological Technologists in Radiation Therapy

·         CPR certified.

·         Must be in good standing with all CE and license requirements.




Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

·         Knowledge of ICD-10-CM, CPT, and modifiers and their usage.

·         Ability to work with patients with acute, chronic, and complex disease processes.

·         Possesses a strong knowledge of immobilization, simulation, and all aspects of treatment delivery.

·         Ability to work in a high demand environment with multiple physicians.

·         Possesses high levels of motivation and work ethic, conflict resolution skills, team oriented, organized and detail oriented, and exhibits good follow-through on tasks..

·         Possesses above average communication skills with the ability to relate effectively to the public and health care professionals.
