Overview

JOB SUMMARY:

 

Performs clinical duties while acting as a member of the interdisciplinary patient care team on the 1800 Behavioral Health Services Crisis Stabilization Unit. Responsibilities include providing basic patient care as well as assisting with administrative tasks on the 1800 Unit.

 

Staff member provides patient care, treatment, and services within the scope of their license, certification, registration, and/or assessed competencies.  Practice will be in accordance with laws and regulations. 

 

Responsibilities

Under the direction of the charge nurse performs all duties assigned as a member of the multidisciplinary team. These include providing basic patient care and acting as a therapeutic agent in groups.

 

JOB RESPONSIBILTIES:

  1. Taking vital signs
  2. Measuring blood sugar levels
  3. Supervising eating and assisting with other ADLs, as needed
  4. Performing safety checks
  5. Assisting with admissions & discharges
  6. Setting up patient’s room upon admission
  7. Sesponding appropriately to escalating patients
  8. Acting as part of the department’s response team to codes on the unit
  9. Acting as a therapeutic agent in individual and group encounters with patients and family members
  10. Assisting department nursing and case management staff
  11. Assisting ancillary staff with procedures and tests involving 1800 Unit patients
  12. Documenting clinical activities accurately, thoroughly, and timely in the medical record and the EMR
  13. Supporting department performance improvement initiatives and goals
  14. Supporting the care team with administrative duties such as answering the phones, greeting visitors to the unit, etc. as needed
  15. Changing bed linens as directed by the patient’s nurse
  16. Emptying the dirty linen basket at the end of each shift
  17. Initiating patient shower and washing clothes upon admission to unit, and as directed by the nurse during the stay
  18. Searching patient’s person and belongings for contraband and prohibited personal items upon admission’
  19. Knowing and appropriately using AIDET for all customers

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education, Experience and Licensure Required:

·         High school graduate

·         Bachelors degree in psychology, social work or related field preferred

·         Prior experience in psychiatric, substance abuse, or hospital setting preferred

·         Demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks and complete assignments within deadlines 

·         Flexibility, ability to work on several cases simultaneously

·         Ability to work collaboratively with a wide variety of customers including colleagues

·         Demonstrated and unwavering commitment to customer service excellence at all times, under all conditions

·         Excellent verbal and written communication skills

·         Excellent customer service skills under all conditions

 

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Ability to remain calm and provide excellent service even in stressful situations and in dealing with a variety of diverse people.
  • Ability to listen and hear effectively, elicit information while being able to guide telephone conversations
  • Ability to interact effectively with people in psychiatric crisis and de-escalate situations, as needed
  • Ability to organize and perform multiple responsibilities and tasks
  • Ability to hear alarms, BP’s, call bells, phones, intercoms
  • Ability to see, read, and write
  • Ability to communicate effectively by speaking clearly and distinctly in English
  • Ability to use a computer

Ability to function independently while supporting department & hospital objectives & goals

 

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Hospital experience with psychiatric patients.
• Previous experience as a nursing student or nursing assistant preferred.
• If recovering from an addiction, must have at least 2 years recovery.
• Must possess the ability to empathize with others.
• Able to remain calm and deal appropriately with crisis situations.
• Able to set limits with patients.
