Responsibilities

 

JOB SUMMARY:

The Respiratory Therapist is responsible for respiratory therapy duties including oxygen administration, application of ventilators, initiation, assessment of, and recommendations for respiratory care services including diagnostic studies under physician supervision.

Provides patient care, treatment, and services within the scope of their license, certification, registration, and/or assessed competencies. Practice will be in accordance with laws and regulations and will adhere to established policies, procedures and practice guidelines.

 

JOB RESPONSIBILTIES:

Interprets ABG results and manipulate ventilator to normalize ABGs and able to discuss interpretation with physician.

Assesses ventilator patient progress in the protocol and make decisions to continue current path or slow down for a recovery period. B/S and vital signs (Decision making)

Analyzes patient data, current labs, pt. assessment, know formulas and calculate proper method of care.

Follows RT protocols in Ventilator Weaning, Bronchodilator, Oxygen, Intubation, Emergent Bipap, etc.

Provides end of shift report.

Knows patient diagnosis and concerns that may slow progress in expected outcomes, gives pertinent information and hand off reports.

Documents ventilator flowsheets, DARP, Collaborative Care Plan, Patient/Family Education, and Educational Packet in room.

Has an understanding of RVUs. Counts RVUs appropriately.

Leaves assignment sheet in the department at the end of the shift.

Responsible for completing work assignments regarding therapy, equipment, breaks and meals, according to workload distribution and patient level of acuity.

Participates in cost awareness/effectiveness program for the proper use of equipment & supplies.

Restocks supplies.

Consistently follows computer based (SCM) charging and orders.

Yearly reviews Policy and Procedure Manual.

Consistently updates the patient board in the department.

Keeps Supervisor informed of pertinent unit activities, incidents, & unusual occurrences daily as needed.

Takes an active part in PI information gathering, review, and makes recommendations from data, with follow up, as in EKG process.

Maintains on a daily basis the activity & attitude towards hospital safety rules, adherence to infection control standards, & department cleanliness.

Promotes the development of “teamwork” on the job: Initiates communication with others about common concerns.

Uses a team approach to addressing projects and problems, patient care, i.e., Protocols.

Actively participates in problem solving of staff discontent during the shift.

Participates in continuous quality improvement teams and activities.

Participates in supporting the organization’s vision, mission and values and adheres to DeKalb Medical Standards of Behavior.

Performs other duties as assigned to meet the goals and objectives of DeKalb Medical.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education, Experience and Licensure Required:

Graduate of AMA approved school of Respiratory Therapy

Registered (RRT)Georgia State License, R.C.P., required

ACLS required for full time and preferred for PRN employees

BCLS requiredOne (1) year clinical experience preferred

 

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

Skilled in intubation.

Skilled in tracheostomy tube change.

Ability to perform arterial puncture.

Ability to assist bronchoscopy

Ability to calibrate and operate all equipment.

Ability to operate AVL Opti machine, trouble shoot and run controls.

Ability to perform proficiency testing.

Ability to clean bronchoscope, know the process, and Cidex rules.

Ability to provide excellent patient assessment

Ability to maintain positive attitude in working with staff members & medical staff by exhibiting effective human relation skills, positive personal attitude, loyalty & teamwork.

Performs skills and competencies as defined in orientation checklist and annual departmental competency checklist if applicable.

Demonstrates and maintains competencies specific to patient population served.
